Though there are many countries around the world where you can find hand made and hand knoted carpets, but when we talk about fine silk carpets there are only two names which come to the mind that is Persia and Kashmir. Knowing that Persian carpets may have been very popular in the early 19th century as Kashmir carpets were not so fine in quality since they were mostly made of wool or wool/silk but then Kashmir started making silk carpets and since then it has only improved in making them better and better in colors designs or for that matter quality, Kashmir carpets developed in every respect at the same time Persian carpets started diminishing from carpet world as they could not keep with pace with which the taste of people was changing from vegetable or natural dye carpets to more of new colors fast devloped as envoirnmatal friendly it is here the “Kashmir carpets” adopted as per the linking and choice of the poeple ,with out making any compromise on quality, color or knots. The Colors used carpets are mostly synthetic dyes this was also plus point for Kashmir carpets to become more popular than Persian as thy were not ready to change since they lacked the will for adopting from natural to synthetic, may it had something to do with there making as it was mostly accepted that carpets loose there color due to natural life, but on the other hand Kashmir carpets were becoming more popular and more in demand as they made them look more and like perfect in color and design, then if you look at the designs the Kashmir Carpets look more Traditional than Persian Knots the Kashmir carpets are much more better knotted and evenly which is unlikely in Persian carpets as they have odd numbering of knots, it has 18 warps x 20 wefts that makes carpets look uneven in design than if you have 20 x20 though carpets can never be perfect since they as they are hand made/ hand knotted, but a craftsman can justify his skill(in Kashmir no women or children are making carpets)and more over it needs patience as they take months all together to make a carpet since men have more patience than other two it makes it more special. The carpets can have as many as 1600 or even 1800 knots per square inch but normally Kashmir silk carpets can have above than 576 knots per square inch As they say” to own a carpet you have to fall in love with it” |
